The History of Buster's Town

Everyone remembers the popular and successful show "The Wonder Years". During its fourth season one of the most well-liked episodes was "Buster", dealing with the Arnold Family's dog. The producers decided to film the episode again - from Buster's view. Aired as a "Wonder Years" special on an animal adventure day on ABC the response of the viewers was overwhelming. Certainly the casting of Robert Redford as Buster's voice contributed a part to it.

It was just obvious to create a spin-off: an own TV show for Buster. "Buster's Town" was born. Crossovers and cameos of the "Wonder Years" cast were supposed to guarantee a success. Like "The Wonder Years" the show should have ended with Kevin going to College. And like "The Wonder Years" it was cancelled earlier.

Unfortunately most reviews about the pilot were dreadful. Also it was not possible to convince Redford to join the cast - he just was to busy making films. So the producers decided to take on Robert Picardo (better known as Coach Cutlip, Kevin's Gym Teacher and the Holographic Doctor aboard "Star Trek - Voyager"). They appreciated his acting talent and since he wasn't a returning "Wonder Years" character anymore (as Kevin went to High School) there were no obstacles to include him in "Buster's Town". While the "Wonder Years" fans loved their choice most TV viewers were disappointed by Redford's departure.

When also the second regular episode was a disappointment the ratings were falling. Even the highly acclaimed two-parter "Withdrawal"/"The Greatest Come Back", featuring Fred Savage (Kevin Arnold), Danica McKellar (Winnie Cooper) and Jason Hervey (Wayne Arnold) couldn't help. Next week's episode was pre-empted twice and so the sixth episode was aired three weeks after "The Greatest Come Back". ABC's intransparent broadcasting policy dug the grave for "Buster's Town".

After only six episodes the show was cancelled and replaced by reruns until a mid-season show started. There are rumors that E! (US cable TV) will re-air the show soon.
