«The Wonder Years» is finally available on DVD

The long wait is over. In the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia «The Wonder Years» is now available on DVD. A release of individual season sets has begun in Brazil and Spain as well. A release in Germany was under consideration. However, excessive costs for the dubbed German language version seem to prevent a release at this point.

Bonus Features

For this release, over 23 hours of bonus features have been produced.

Music Replacements

Starvista Entertainment/Time Life did an incredible job and managed to clear more than 96% of songs played on The Wonder Years (their list does not include classical music and TV themes but for now we assume these compositions will be on the DVDs). Thanks to TVShowsonDVD.com, Starvista Entertainment/Time Life confirmed that the following few songs could not be cleared for the DVD release and have been replaced with similar music (no cuts have been made):

  • Love Theme from the movie «Romeo and Juliet» -- Nino Rota (Episode 5/1.05 «The Phone Call»). Replaced by «Lovers Theme/The Star-Crossed Lovers».
  • Riders on the Storm -- The Doors (Episode 7/2.01 «Heart of Darkness»). Replaced by «Children of the Night».
  • Here Comes the Sun -- Richie Havens (Episode 7/2.01 «Heart of Darkness»). Replaced by «Train to Nowhere».
  • Variations on a Theme by Erik Satie (1st and 2nd Movements - Adapted from «Trois Gymnopedies») -- Blood, Sweat & Tears (Episode 22/2.16 «Whose Woods Are These?»). Replaced by «Le Seunne Fite».
  • Light My Fire -- The Doors (Episode 23/2.17 «How I'm Spending My Summer Vacation»). Replaced by «Love's on Fire».
  • Spinning Wheel -- Blood, Sweat & Tears (Episode 24/3.01 «Summer Song»). Replaced by David Clayton-Thomas version.
  • Love Theme from the movie «Romeo and Juliet» -- Nino Rota (Episode 26/3.03 «Wayne on Wheels»). Replaced by «Romeo & Juliet with Narration/Lovers Theme».
  • Long May You Run -- Neil Young (Episode 30/3.07 «Family Car»). Replaced by «Keep Your Motor Running».
  • Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera) (Episode 38/3.15 «Tree House»). Replaced by «Let's Call The Whole Thing Off».
  • Tammy -- Liberace (Episode 52/4.06 «Little Debbie»). Replaced by «Sammy».
  • Here Comes the Sun -- Richie Havens (Episode 69/4.23 «Wonder Years (Clip Show)»). Replaced by «Train to Nowhere».
  • You've Made Me So Very Happy -- Blood, Sweat & Tears (Episode 101/6.08 «Kevin Delivers»). Replaced by David Clayton-Thomas version.
  • Let's Stay Together -- Al Green (Episode 105/6.12 «Alice in Autoland»). Replaced with sound-alike version.
  • «Brothers» from the movie «The Mission» -- Ennio Morricone (Instrumental) (Episode 115/6.22 «Independence Day»). Replaced by «Pastorale».

The DVDs are region 1 encoded and only contain the English language version (unfortunately only with Closed Captioning in English but no regular subtitles that would be usable outside the US/Canada).

UK DVD Edition of The Wonder Years

Bonus Features

Fabulous Films confirms that all 23 hours of bonus features and the booklets of the US/Canada edition are included in the UK edition.

Music Replacements

The soundtrack of the UK edition differs from the US edition. According to Fabulous Films, with one exception all the songs that could not be cleared for the US release could be cleared for the UK release. One song could not be cleared for the DVD release and has been replaced with similar music (no cuts have been made):

  • Here Comes the Sun -- Richie Havens (Episode 7/2.01 «Heart of Darkness»). Replaced by «Train to Nowhere».
  • Here Comes the Sun -- Richie Havens (Episode 69/4.23 «Wonder Years (Clip Show)»). Replaced by «Train to Nowhere».

However, according to our information, customers found a couple instances where replacement music was used on the UK DVDs, but the correct music was used in the US edition. Moreover 14 episodes of the UK DVDs, scattered across different seasons, have a wrong opening theme music. Fabulous Films promised to have the discs corrected but has been silent on the issue ever since.

The DVDs are region 2 encoded and only contain the English language version and no subtitles.

On May 9, 2016, Fabulous Films released a complete DVD box set in the UK. The set is available in general retail. Fans worldwide can now order this set via online stores (e.g. amazon.co.uk).
